At MorningStar of Happy Valley, we understand the importance of gathering together as a community to “break bread” each day. We believe food is a healing medicine unlike any other, and when our residents sit down to a delicious meal served restaurant-style, it creates lasting bonds and fellowship within our “family.”
We recognize that good nutrition is especially important to the wellbeing of seniors, which is why food is prepared largely from scratch and feature the freshest of ingredients from high-quality producers and/or are locally sourced. MorningStar’s meals are prepared under the direction of our Executive Chef. As a resident, you will be treated to seasonal menus and special holiday feasts such as those we enjoy at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Also, we modify menus and recipes to accommodate residents’ changing needs and tastes. Moreover, you can easily self-manage any dietary restrictions as we offer a wide selection of low sodium, sugar free, no sugar added, and low-fat foods. MorningStar of Happy Valley also believes that nutrient-rich ingredients can help stimulate the appetite and support brain health. This is why we prepare meals using BrainWise super foods that contain a high concentration of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. Super foods include acai, leafy dark greens, dark chocolates, berries, and fish, nuts and other foods high in Omega 3 fats. For our memory care residents, food is as much about Community as it is about Nutrition. To encourage appetites, our team members sit and share meals with residents and many are served “family style” as they are in private homes. Much of our food is modified out of respect for residents’ somewhat compromised eating abilities and include finger foods, texture-modified diets and easy-to-recognize balanced meals that taste as good as they look. A large study out of Europe found a link between older adults who take blood pressure-lowering drugs and a lower risk of developing dementia. Medical News Today explains that while researchers are still unclear as to what causes dementia, much work is being done to improve prevention strategies. By studying “potential risk factors that may contribute to the development of this condition,” scientists say they hope to learn more about connections between certain health conditions and higher rates of dementia.
Another study published last year in the journal, Neurology, found that patients with hypertension had a higher risk of experiencing brain lesions related to dementia. In this newest study from the University of Leipzig in Germany, the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines in France, and the Frankfurt, Germany branch of IQVIA, researchers had access to a large database that collects and stores health information on millions of people. Using the Disease Analyzer database, researchers looked at 12,405 people, aged 60 and older, with or without dementia. They compared those who took antihypertensive drugs with those who had for periods of time or had never taken the drugs. Results showed that those who took “certain antihypertensive drugs — including beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, and angiotensin II receptor blockers — seemed to have a lower risk of dementia.” The study authors warn that antihypertensive drugs do not guarantee a person will not develop dementia. They say rather it highlights the benefits of such drugs. Source: medicalnewstoday.com/articles/325393.php If a loved one is suffering from Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease, you may need to lower your expectations of what to expect from them during the holidays. When you include them in family gatherings, you must take precautions to not let them get over stimulated as boisterous, noisy activities can agitate and confuse people with dementia. Experts say it is better to have a small get-together or to set aside a quiet part of the house where relatives can take turns visiting the person in a more intimate setting.
The goal is to make the holiday season as easy on you as it is on the person with dementia so everyone can focus on enjoying their time together. The Alzheimer’s Association recommends that you keep plans simple and maintain your loved one’s daily routines as much as possible to avoid upsetting them. They also advise celebrating early in the day and to have a noon meal rather than a late dinner. If you are visiting your loved one at a memory care unit, bring along some pictures of the family and take the time to quietly sit and talk about them. If you are bringing your loved one to your home, play familiar music and serve foods you know they like. Set time aside to do some activities with the family such as making a memory book or telling stories. Other suggestions include taking a short walk or decorating cookies together. Be sure to warn family members and friends about any changes in their behavior and condition so they do not expect more than the person has the ability to offer. Remind them that Alzheimer’s disease can diminish a person’s ability to communicate and that it is helpful to speak slowly and in a relaxed tone. The Alzheimer’s Association says to avoid saying things like, “Don’t you remember?” Also address the person by name and to be patient, stay calm and supportive. In fact, a Harvard University study shows that “elderly individuals, who had active social lives, were happier, healthier and more likely to live longer, than elderly people who did not have an active social life.” Results suggest that “loneliness can deter an elderly person’s life, while socializing can enrich it.”
Seniors who regularly socialize are less likely to become depressed and are better-equipped to get help if they experience mental health problems. Also older adults with a variety of social support are more likely to regularly exercise, which has been shown to keep the mind active and help slow down memory loss as well as improve overall health. In addition, strong social support can help maintain a senior’s self-esteem and sense of worth. As we socialize, our brains are mentally engaged, which improves our cognitive functions and may prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. Activities we do with friends can be fun and stimulate our mind such as playing cards, Bingo, and word or trivia games as well as something as simple as carrying on a conversation. MorningStar of Fountain Hills offers 63 private assisted living suites and 28 secure memory care suites devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Sources: www.negeriatrics.com/blog/how-socialization-can-benefit-the-elderly While we have all heard a lot about Alzheimer’s and may even know someone suffering from the disease, we may not be aware of the common signs and symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s. Many people think that forgetting things is a sign of Alzheimer’s, while others too readily accept certain symptoms of Alzheimer’s as just getting older.
The Alzheimer’s Association has a website full of useful information and resources for families dealing with the disease and publishes a list of the 10 Early Signs and Symptoms of Alzheimer's. One of the first signs they say is a symptom of Alzheimer’s is not occasional forgetfulness but forgetfulness that disrupts daily life. For example the person is having problems retaining recently learned information and trouble remembering important dates or events, or they are asking the same questions over and over again. People in the early stages of Alzheimer’s may have more difficulty doing things they used to do easily such as paying bills or following recipes. Even driving to well-known locations or remembering the rules of a favorite game can be troublesome. Other signs include feeling confused about the passage of time and finding it harder and harder to keep track of dates, time and seasons. Experiencing vision problems such as judging distances and determining color or contrast as well as problems following or partaking in a conversation are also common signs of the disease. Other signs can include changes in personality and mood, and withdrawing from social activities the person used to enjoy. For the full listing and description of the 10 Common Signs of Alzheimer’s, please visit the Alzheimer’s Association website. Source: alz.org/alzheimers-dementia/10_signs Many families may be unaware of the extensive care services that assisted living communities such as MorningStar of Fountain Hills offer to residents. One term that is useful to know is Activities of Daily Living (ADL), which describes the various care services found in an assisted living community. These activities typically include dressing, bathing, eating, toileting, etc. At MorningStar a resident’s care level is determined after a thorough evaluation with our Wellness Director (a licensed nurse).
One of the care services we offer is medication management by a Certified Med Care Manager. The cost for this service is factored into a resident’s level of care and is part of their monthly fee. Our service includes both the ordering and supervised administration of the medications, and we have two price points based on the number and type of prescriptions involved. For many elderly people, medication management is a very important service. Statistics show that “many hospitalizations are due to just a few drugs that should be monitored carefully to prevent problems. Blood thinners (such as warfarin), diabetes medications (such as insulin), seizure medications (such as phenytoin), and opioid analgesics are some examples of these medications.” Forgetting to take prescribed medications, not taking the right dosage or not finishing prescriptions is common among seniors and can lead to serious medical problems. Knowing a certified MorningStar medication manager is in charge of your loved one’s medications can provide a family with peace of mind. Dominick Bailey, a clinical pharmacist specializing in geriatric care reminds his elderly patients that, “Medications only work if you take them.” He adds, “If they sit on the shelf, they don’t work.” After visiting our website or once you take a tour of our community, you most certainly will understand why MorningStar of Fountain Hills is the type of assisted living or memory care you want for youself or your loved one. You are probably looking for a place that fits their budget, care needs, and lifestyle preferences. Moreover you know it is not a decision to make lightly as you will not want to move mom or dad out of a place after just a few months. That is why the experts suggest that if the circumstances allow that you take your time and you get it right.
The Internet has several checklists and suggestions on what to look for when searching for senior living communities including questions to ask when talking to the staff. One thing everyone agrees on is that it is a good idea to take a tour of the place. Questions you will want to ask include suite sizes and configurations such as studios or one- and two bedrooms, and what is the availability. If you plan to have both of your parents move in, ask if they can share a suite. Also, if applicable, find out if the community supports Companion Living (where two people of the same sex share a suite). You will also want to learn more about the care services your loved one will receive. Will they have access to care 24/7? How close is the community to a medical care facility and how are medical emergencies handled? Does the staff receive any type of special training? Do any of the caregivers have CPR training? Location is another thing to consider as you will want a place that is convenient to all of the family and friends that will want to visit. Be sure to ask if you will be allowed to visit at any time or is there a set schedule when residents can receive visitors.
