As we age, engaging in memory exercises is just important as physically excising our bodies. The Alzheimer’s Association offers recommendations on some easy ways to daily exercise our brain with activities that include reading, writing and doing crossword or other puzzles, playing games and attending events such as lectures or plays.
They state that there are four areas we can work on to help reduce our risk of cognitive decline: physical health and exercise, diet and nutrition, cognitive activity, and social engagement. In fact, research has found that simply by keeping our brains active, we can actually increase its vitality and may even help to generate new brain cells. An article on the “6 simple steps to keep your mind sharp at any age” from the Harvard Health Publication outlines ways to help prevent cognitive decline and reduce your risk of dementia. The article stresses the importance of continuing to learn as challenging our brains with mental exercises is “believed to activate processes that help maintain individual brain cells and stimulate communication among them.” MorningStar of Fountain Hills could not agree more. Our assisted living community is loaded with activities that are not only fun but also help to stimulate our brains. Just a quick look at our monthly calendar shows an abundance of activities such as word, board, and trivia games that help to challenge our brains. Residents at MorningStar enjoy games such as Rummikub, Bingo, Blackjack, and Yahtzee. Regardless of personal interest, our seniors find plenty to do to keep them interested in life. With a range of activities such as poetry readings, writing club, arts and crafts, and fun-filled card games, residents stay social and keep their brains active. MorningStar of Fountain Hills represents the very best in senior living with a mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” Our foundation is one built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting team members with a felt calling to serve. Research has proved what many of us already knew, that smiling makes you feel happy. A 30-year study from the University of California, Berkeley reports that smiling has many health benefits including helping you celebrate more birthdays. Smiling is even easier to do than frowning as it only takes 17 facial muscles to smile and 49 muscles to frown.
The study led by psychologists Dacher Keltner, PhD and Lee Anne Harker, PhD, found that smiling generates our “feel good” endorphins that are associated with exercise. Smiling can help us look younger as those who smiled more appeared to be three years younger than their less smiley counterparts. Psychiatrists also report that patients naturally smile more as they start to recover from depression. In addition smiling causes a morphine-like action that helps to relieve stress and reduce the perception of pain in the brain. A 1980s study even showed smiling makes us more approachable and friendly. The study examined the way men approach women at a bar. The women who smiled more were 60% more likely to be approached by a man. Smiling may even help a person earn more money or to be promoted in the workplace, as studies show that people who smile a lot are considered more trustworthy and generous. Researchers say smiling is instinctive as they now have evidence of babies in the womb smiling. Also don’t forget we have all had the experience of smiling at someone and having them smile back at us. Scientists explain that the act of smiling is contagious as we have a subconscious tendency to match others’ emotions. A smile is an international language that is universally understood and one that is easy to use over and over again. Next time you are feeling sad, try and think of something that makes you smile as you are sure to start feeling better! We consider serving seniors our calling, and as we have seen firsthand the traumatizing effects of Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia, we join our parent company, MorningStar Senior Living in their efforts to end Alzheimer’s. Other charitable activities will also involve senior-focused, not-for-profit organizations.
Throughout the year, our community will participate in events that help to raise funds as well as awareness for Alzheimer’s disease, and it is our honor to partner with the Alzheimer’s Association as MorningStar does in every market we serve. Some of these activities will include getting a team together to participate in the “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” event, which takes every August. Participants will include staff members, residents, and family members and friends who will join the fun as walkers, runners, exhibitors, and sponsors. The 5K walk is the world's largest event and raises funds for Alzheimer's care, support and research. Each year our collective MorningStar communities have helped raise a lot of money toward a cure. MorningStar of Happy Valley will also participant in the uplifting “The Longest Day” celebration, which takes place each year in June on Summer Solstice. In order to thrive and lead fulfilling lives, people need to socialize with one another, and seniors are no different. In fact studies show loneliness can have a detrimental effect on the elderly while socializing can help to enhance and enrich seniors’ lives.
An article in the US News & World Report discusses a study on seniors’ social interactions conducted by the Rush Memory and Aging Project and funded by the National Institute on Aging. The study found that the most socially active seniors experienced one-fourth the rate of cognitive decline as seniors with the lowest levels of social activity. The results were independent of other factors that may influence cognitive decline including physical activity, general health, and age. During a five year period, the Rush University project followed 1,138 adults with an average age of 80. Their research discovered that “elderly people with the highest levels of social activity -- doing things such as visiting friends, going to parties or attending church -- showed much lower levels of cognitive decline than those who were the least socially active.” As one of the best senior living communities Fountain Hills AZ offers, MorningStar of Fountain Hills strongly believes in addressing our residents’ overall wellbeing through physical, intellectual and spiritual activities as well as to help them engage socially.
